What early treatment is for

Early treatment, sometimes called Phase 1, happens while a child still has some or all baby teeth. It isn't about making teeth perfectly straight. It's about the foundation: giving the tongue room, widening a narrow upper jaw, correcting a crossbite or underbite, and steering jaw growth while it's still responsive.

Not every child needs it. Many do best with simply being watched as they grow, and Dr. Cindy will tell you plainly if that's the case for yours.

Children who often benefit

• A narrow upper jaw or high palate, with too little room for the tongue
• Crowded baby teeth, or adult teeth with no room to come in
• A crossbite, underbite, or front teeth that don't overlap properly
• Mouth breathing, snoring, or tight facial muscles

Working with your child's other providers

During this stage, we often coordinate with ENTs and myofunctional therapists, who help with nasal breathing and strengthen the muscles of the tongue and face. Treatment tends to hold up best when those pieces are addressed together.

If my child will need treatment later, why start early?

We plan with the expectation that your child will need further orthodontic treatment once all the adult teeth are in. Early treatment addresses a different need: guiding jaw development and addressing certain bite concerns while your child is still growing, when some changes are easier to achieve than they would be later.

When we recommend early treatment, we'll explain what we want to address now, why timing matters for your child, and what we expect to revisit as the adult teeth come in.
